Demonstration Structures.

Friends Of The Earth approached us to design and fabricate a pair of structures to be used as part of their demonstration at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham.

Initial sketches in response to the brief.

The brief was an exciting opportunity to design a non-permanent structure that could be constructed, moved and deconstructed safely and quickly.

Utilising our knowledge of wooden dowel and key clamp structures we decided this method of construction offered the greatest flexibility, whilst maintaining strength and rigidity.

Our material choices also had to consider the weather, as they were to be outside for the course of the day we had to ensure that all components were able to withstand direct sunlight and potential rain. The use of glavanised key clamp joints and solid Beech dowels accommodated for the unpredictable British weather.

We developed a design that ensured each individual element of the construction could be re-used or repurposed in the future, creating minimal waste and effort. This was a key factor in our design as it was in line with Friends of the Earth’s ideals.

Illustrative components were made from surplus material from past projects and attached to the structures via custom made brackets. Ensuring that these elements of the design were also easy to attach and lightweight enough to be moved if needed.
